This lyrical pair was inspired by a book jacket cover by Talwin Morris, who designed for English publisher Blackie and Sons in the late 19th century. Morris was connected to Charles Rennie Mackintosh and known for his Glasgow Style. Finished in grey blue.
Dimensions

Actual Tile Size: Approximately 7 7/8” x 7 7/8”. As each Motawi tile is crafted by hand, dimensions may vary slightly by up to 1/16".
Tiles are 5/8" thick and have a notch at the back for hanging
Materials + Construction

First, tile designs are etched into plaster molds. Clay is pressed into the mold, trimmed and bisque-fired in the kiln. Each tile is then glazed by hand and returned to the kiln for a final firing. With the intricate art tiles, Motawi glazers employ the centuries-old Cuenca technique, carefully filling glazes into the “basins” created by thin, raised lines in the clay.
Meet the Maker

Motawi Tileworks is a ceramics studio based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Nawal Motawi, owner and artistic director of The Tileworks, graduated from the University of Michigan’s Stamps School of Art & Design and made tile in her garage before founding the company in 1992. Nawal is still the primary designer, and loves to draw inspiration from great American and European designers like Charley Harper and Frank Lloyd Wright and adapt them to tile, as well as crafting her own designs like the perennial favorite Pine Landscape.
