Hand-Tufted Wool Rugs

Tufted Wool Rug FAQs

What is the difference between hand-tufted and hand-knotted rugs?

Hand-tufted rugs are made by punching wool yarn through a fabric backing and securing it with latex and a second backing, which is faster and usually costs less. Hand-knotted rugs are made by tying individual knots around foundation threads, which takes longer and sheds less. Both can be made from wool, and you can see each in its own collection.

Are your hand-tufted rugs 100% wool?

Every hand-tufted rug in this collection is a wool rug, and most are 100% wool. Each product page describes the fiber, so you can check before you buy.

Do hand-tufted rugs shed?

Yes, and more than hand-knotted rugs. A hand-tufted pile is made of cut yarn clusters with more loose ends, so it sheds more noticeably and for longer while it breaks in. Vacuum gently, no more than twice a month and without a beater bar, and use a rug pad. Our guide to cleaning and maintaining a wool rug explains what to expect.

Can I try a small rug before buying a larger one?

Yes. Our no-risk trade up policy lets you buy a small size, such as a 2x3, and return it at any time for full credit toward a larger rug. Our smallest rugs ship with a prepaid return label.
