Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest architects of the 20th century.

Built in 1907 in Riverside, Illinois, the Avery Coonley House is a grand Prairie-style residence designed by Wright for Avery and Queene Coonley. As was the case with all Frank Lloyd Wright buildings, the home's exterior and interior were envisioned and executed as a unified whole. In addition to the main house, the estate included sunken gardens, a gardener's cottage and a coach house.

Wright's drawing of a tile frieze for the Coonley House was the basis for Motawi Tileworks' 4x4 Avery Tulip art tile. While the drawing was never executed on the house, the design remains an early example of Wright's geometric nature abstractions.
Dimensions

Actual tile size: 3-13/16 inch square
Tile is 5/8 of an inch thick and has a notch at the back for hanging.
Materials + Construction

First, tile designs are etched into plaster molds. Clay is pressed into the mold, trimmed and bisque-fired in the kiln. Each tile is then glazed by hand and returned to the kiln for a final firing. With the intricate art tiles, Motawi glazers employ the centuries-old Cuenca technique, carefully filling glazes into the “basins” created by thin, raised lines in the clay.
Meet the Maker

Motawi Tileworks is a ceramics studio based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Nawal Motawi, owner and artistic director of The Tileworks, graduated from the University of Michigan’s Stamps School of Art & Design and made tile in her garage before founding the company in 1992. Nawal is still the primary designer, and loves to draw inspiration from great American and European designers like Charley Harper and Frank Lloyd Wright and adapt them to tile, as well as crafting her own designs like the perennial favorite Pine Landscape.
