Raku Dragonfly Heart Ornament
Modern Bungalow is happy to offer these handcrafted raku ornaments from the West Texas town of Alpine, land of Big Bend National park and the infamous Marfa Lights.
John and Robin Davis are the husband and wife team behind J. Davis Studio. When their daughters Michaela and Hannah were just little girls, they loved digging for treasure in the hard west Texas dirt with their tiny shovels and pails in hand. Their joyful curiosity inspired John to create his line of raku pottery.
The raku firing process was invented in the 16th century by a Japanese monk to make tea bowls to honor the imperfection of everyday life. The rustic and unpredictable surface also creates the essence of an ancient civilization, like an artifact unearthed from a primitive Indian camp ground around in a Rio Grande riverbed.
